Blue depression glass

In a clinical setting, a depressed mood can be something a patient reports (a symptom), or something a clinician observes (a sign), or both. A diathesis-stress model of depression (including clinical depression) is now widely accepted. Sometimes the depressed mood may relate more to internal processes or even be triggered by them. Vincent van Gogh, who himself suffered from depression and mitted suicide, painted this picture in 1890 of a man that can symbolize the desperation and hopelessness felt in depression.   However, if depressed mood lasts at least two weeks, and is acpanied by other symptoms that interfere with daily living, it may be seen as a symptom of clinical depression, dysthymia or some other diagnosable mental illness, or alternatively as sub-syndromal depression.

A check-list of symptoms is not a diagnosis. As noted in the Frank study [citation needed] mentioned above, this particular course of the syndrome, with the breakthrough of anxiety, may have a significant impact on the overall course of the depression.

This implies that underlying personality has some degree of influence over how the mood of individuals is affected by life events. Close medical supervision is critical to proper treatment if a patient presents with both illnesses because the medications tend to work against each other.

Depression may also be orbid with cardiovascular disorders. Regarding the treatment of depression, this hypothesis calls into question any assumptions by the clinician that the typical cause of depression is related to maladaptive perverted thinking processes or other purely endogenous sources.

Seasonal affective disorder may point to an atavistic link with behaviour in hibernation. Other somatic expressions can be a sense of "dispirited", or "lagging" or being weighed down, and a heaviness in breathing, expressed as broken or despondent sighs.

Illnesses and changes in cognition that occur in psychosis and dementias, to name but two, can lead to depression. A lack of control over one's environment can lead to feelings of helplessness. Blue depression glass.
