Depression fact

  The depressed mood is adaptive in that it leads the person towards altering his thought patterns and behavior or way of living or else continues until such a time as he does so.

  Reactions to events, often a loss in some form, are perhaps the most obvious causes. Relapse is more likely if treatment has not resulted in full remission of symptoms.4 In fact, current guidelines for antidepressant use remend 4 to 6 months of continuing treatment after symptom resolution to prevent relapse.

  A lack of control over one's environment can lead to feelings of helplessness. Depression of the central nervous system of an animal may be expressed as drowsiness or sleep, lack of coordination and unconsciousness. However, if depressed mood lasts at least two weeks, and is acpanied by other symptoms that interfere with daily living, it may be seen as a symptom of clinical depression, dysthymia or some other diagnosable mental illness, or alternatively as sub-syndromal depression.

  The reason for relapse in these cases is as poorly understood as the change in brain physiology induced by the medications themselves. The different types of Depression and Anxiety are classified separately by the DSM-IV-TR, with the exception of hypomania, which is included in the bipolar disorder category.

  The loss of a loved spouse, child, friend or relation, a physical illness or loss of lifestyle, tends to lead to feelings of depression. It can be argued that depression and clinical depression is in fact the refusal of a person to heed the call to change from within his own mind.
